SO. Last friday's Young Justice - 1.15, "Humanity"

WHAT AN AMAZING EPISODE. Really, wow. That just blew me away.

Things I loved about this ep:
  • Everything? Yeah, everything. But let's start at the beginning...

  • Zatanna. What a great female character. I've heard of the adult version from the comics but I don't know much beyond that she does magic (and has a completely BOSS costume) but even knowing as little as I did and the fact that she was a small part of the episode, I gotta say I adored her. She's fierce and fun and clever and brave. Please tell me her father gives in and lets her on the team? Please? More badass broads needed and she'd fill the role spectacularly; not to mention? Everyone on the team seemed to like her and respect her skills. WIN/WIN.

TL;DR ZATANNA IS AWESOME. HER JOINING THE TEAM COULD ONLY END WELL. <3

  • Robin flirting with Zatanna. I kind of love that he owned to the fact that he flirted like Wally (Wally gets a lot of flack because he flirts with M'gann what some would say is an obnoxious amount even though it should be obvious that she's not interested but sometimes I feel like he's just not aware of it. I think if he knew he'd back off for sure. Not that M'gann should just have to "suffer through" and I know that she doesn't want to hurt his feelings by actually saying something but dayum, girl. If the only way to get him to stop is to tell him than just rip off that bandaid already, okay? On the other hand, I don't think it makes her so much uncomfortable as it makes her feel awkward for not returning his feelings. And also, for being in a secret relationship that she's oh so unhelpfully not telling him about. /tangent) Her reply was completely adorbs, btw. Funny how that whole thing was cute and non-obnoxious like certain other "romantic entanglements" on this show unavoidably are. *squishes*

  • RED TORNADOOOO~ And his siblings. ;_; "You were never human but you were heroes once." (Or something to that effect.) Holy Jesus, all my tears. That was a really touching story and they animated it so wonderfully. The bit where Firebrand and the other one (I don't remember his name) hold Red Volcano down under the lava it was silent but for the music? Wow. Great scene, illustrated beautifully. It's such a tragedy that just when they make a choice for themselves they end up dying for it. I wonder how RT felt about that. Did he feel at all? Was he dismayed/disappointed as a android that strived to be more human, he didn't feel anything?

Even the scene where RT had no flipping legs and yet he saved "humanity" by funneling the ash cloud out into space was beautiful. (Wally being so damn smart and knowing immediately what RV was up to with the volcano fills me with glee. I adore smart!Wally the best. <3)

  • The whole bit with the team coming to understand RT better. First with Kaldur in the bioship telling Superboy not to jump to conclusions about RT being the mole (making him realize that RT & SB were both created as "weapons" by outside forces was a nice touch) and then when the team finally understood that RT wanted to be their denmother so he could learn more about being human... ;_________; So. Damn. Touching. All the characters are all so adorable and lovely it sometimes makes me want to just sit and sob at how amazing they all are. *sniff*

  • Zatanna with SB's wolf. Because it was random and d'aww~

  • Um. Other things. Many other wonderful things that I can't think about right now because my brain is a wibbly wobbly, ooey gooey mess. But yeah. ♥

Things I didn't like about the episode:
  • Nothing... oh, wait,

  • I am pretty disappointed that we didn't get to see the League's reaction to the team going in and getting Red Tornado back. (And oh yeah, they kinda saved the world while they were at it as well, didn't they? MM HMM) BATMAN WOULD HAVE HAD KITTENS. FLASH WOULD HAVE RUN A GROOVE AROUND WALLY WITH WORRY!PACING. AQUAMAN... would probably have furrowed his brow in thought and then given Kaldur a pat on the back or something, idk. But. It would have been awesome. GA would do something weird (idk he seems like kind of a weird guy, to me), J'onn would have gotten the exact playback of how things went down psychically and been proud, but Superman, of course, would be absent or a complete ass or both (and Batman would have glared at him later or something) but overall it would have been icing on the amazeballs cake that was this episode.

    So, so sad it was not to be, you do not even know. ;_;

IN OTHER NEWS, I went to the comic shop todayyy!~

JL Dark is easily becoming my fav New 52 series, guys. Just. Magic. :3 And John Constantine and Zatanna and Deadman, oh my! It's going to be a great series, I can already tell.

And then there's Aquaman. OH AQUAMAN. Still getting ALL THE DISRESPECT our little Arthur is. Aquaman #1 was a laugh riot, I am telling you and #2 is pretty much a set up for the asskicking I hope will happen in #3 but yeah. His frustrated face in #1 is PURE GOLD AND I WOULD LIKE TO NOM IT. Idek, you guys. XD It's just. I really love it. (Because, you know, everyone thinks that about Aquaman, right? He's in the JL but what does anyone really know about him? He's got a trident. He can talk to fish. And is king of that one city under the water. He doesn't get the same respect as Batman or Superman or the rest of the JL and the writer's are totally acknowledging it. They're going 'yeah, this is what people know/think about Aquaman but look. Here's how badass he really is' and just. HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THAT?) And I know he's going to show the naysayers what's up in the next issue and IT'S GOING TO BE FLIPPING GREAT.

The Flash issues have been stellar so far, I think. Barry Allen is a babe in his own right (read: the art is nice) and if I was really shallow that'd be all the reason I need but, come on, it's the Flash! I've only really known the Wally West incarnation so it's interesting to learn what Allen is all about.

Monocyte is this dark, gritty (non-superhero) futuristic (I wanna say post-apocalyptic but that's not really it, google it if you're so inclined) comic I picked up because I read about it online a couple months back and the premise intrigued me. I like the art (it reminds me of Ben Templesmith's art, which is always dark and gritty) and the worldbuilding is crazy cool but the story is kind of... weak and somewhat confusing? Maybe it's because I've been a bit medicated today but it felt at times like it was trying too hard. The language used was a bit ostentatious and unnecessarily big-worded. If it wasn't for the art I wouldn't even consider picking up the next one but it's so lovely... *sigh*

I didn't pick up the new Deadpool or the new Teen Titans because I'm trying to limit myself to no more than 4 per week. So next week, I'll get them with the new Batwoman and Superboy #3s.

I've also been reading The Ultimates mini-series in my spare time. (Basically, it's an AU comic series, made up of multiple mini-series', released by Marvel. It has alternate version of the Avengers, called the Ultimates and is omg amazing. There's also Ultimate Spider-man and Ultimate X-Men, among others, that exist in the same universe but I haven't read any of those.) I really love this series, you guys. Everyone in it is pretty much batshit insane (let me not talk about the clusterfuck that is Betty Ross because whut. the. fuck.) (Thor. Is he a psychiatric patient gone wild or isn't he?) (LOKI. For dwell_ondreamsdwell_ondreams because, well, duh.) which makes it at times bizarre but it's also interesting and is something I felt was more adult oriented than your average superhero comic usually is. (Not as in rated NC-17 adult, but it deals with themes like abusive relationships, politics and even incest, all things that the average teenager might be less interested in reading about. Not that I know anything about the average teenager... but I don't think it would have piqued my interest when I was a teen.) It was written in the early 2000s so it deals a little with the Iraq war and what a world with superheroes response to war might be. Care for a little pre-emptive strike, anyone?

Ultimates I and II were good, III not so much imo (because they changed both the writer and artist, the result of which was a pretty crap story). I almost choked on discovering after having already read it, that Orson Scott Card wrote Ultimate Iron Man. (Basically IM's origin story for the Ultimates universe.) It was... bizarre, like a lot of things are in this universe. There was a lot of talk about brain tissue and regenerative powers and the fact that Tony Stark spent the first few years of his life painted blue... (I shit you not, this is all Ultimates canon.)

So my point? Ha ha ha. Like there was ever a point. Um, I've been reading the Ultimates and I like it. If anyone is at all interested I would be very willing to share (if only to get other people to chat with about them) so poke me and let me know. Ultimates I-III are all mini-series' (the first two are 13 issues each, and the last is about half that long) so it's not a hard series to get into, which I think is the one thing I appreciate about it the most.

YES, I AM AWARE THAT THERE WAS COMICS BLATHER BEYOND THE CUT. THIS HAS NOT ESCAPED MY NOTICE, I ASSURE YOU... #FAILBOATS
